A new report by the policy center Demos addresses this need head-on, calling for an affordable and efficient federal jobs program that could meet critical community and national needs while providing meaningful employment for millions of people who lost their jobs in the Great Recession.

New York, NY — Older Americans have experienced huge, negative financial shifts that now make it more difficult to enter retirement with sustainable economic security, a new study finds. Seventy-eight percent of all senior households are financially vulnerable when it comes to their ability to meet essential expenses and cover projected costs over their lifetimes.

A new study by Demos finds that one-fifth of middle-class families are living paycheck to paycheck, with little margin of security.

Between 1992 and 2001, the average credit-card debt among Americans over age 65 nearly doubled to $4,041.
