Dēmos President Taifa Smith Butler released the following statement regarding the events of this weekend. While millions of people across the country exercised their First Amendment rights and engaged in peaceful protests, two communities were shaken by terrible acts of political violence:

“This violence stood in stark contrast to the power and purpose people exhibited as they protested the harm being done by the Trump administration and demanded the restoration of democratic norms, the upholding of people’s constitutional rights, and leaders that are accountable to the people they serve.
"Regardless of where one’s political views lie, elected officials should be able to do their jobs and constituents should be able to make their voices heard freely and without fear. We categorically condemn all acts of political violence, in any form.

"These senseless acts reflect deep, unsustainable polarization in our politics, as well as harmful targeting and rhetoric against certain groups. Fundamentally, democracies are about people finding the proper channels to affect political change. This is at the core of our work.
“Tragedies like these remind us of the importance of defending civil society and its foundations. Today, let’s reaffirm our commitment to building a safer, fairer, and more accepting society. One where everyone can freely express their ideas, beliefs, and opinions without fear of violence or retribution.”
