Dēmos President to Congress: ‘Put People Over Politics'

"It’s high time for our lawmakers to put people over politics and pass the Build Back Better Act."

NEW YORK, NY — Dēmos President Taifa Smith Butler issued the following statement Thursday in response to the Biden Administration’s Build Back Better framework

“The American public has expressed overwhelming support for the Build Back Better Act. It’s time to advance this bold agenda without further delay. Political negotiations have centered the out-of-touch will of a few—while neglecting the needs of millions.  This minority of voices has stood in the way of lower drug prices, paid family leave, and dental and vision coverage for millions of families struggling to recover from the pandemic, let alone years of failed policies that have excluded them from economic opportunity. This is a reflection of just how broken our democracy is.

“We have before us a unique opportunity to recover from an economically devastating period and rewrite some of the rules that will broaden economic prosperity. Congress owes all of us—particularly Black and brown people who organized and risked so much to get out and vote last year—the provisions of this bill, which can begin to ensure an equitable recovery and bolster the health and wellbeing of children, families and communities. It’s high time for our lawmakers to put people over politics and pass the Build Back Better Act.”
