"We applaud the DOJ and encourage the Biden administration to continue defending, protecting, and expanding the right to vote."
Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released new guidance to curb the excessive practice of unjustly kicking voters off the voter rolls. Dēmos was joined by allies in applauding the new guidance which stresses guardrails on how and when voters may be removed from the rolls, affirms the 90-day hold prior to federal elections applies to challenges, and clarifies that third-party information is not sufficient for removal. Following the DOJ’s announcement, Dēmos issued the following statement:
“The right to vote is sacred and must be protected,” said Phi Nguyen, Director of Democracy at Dēmos. “With the prospect of mass voter qualification challenges and unjust voter removals ahead of the 2024 general election, we must protect voters and empower election officials with the tools they need to reflect the choice of the voters. The DOJ offers welcome guidelines in this context. We applaud the DOJ and encourage the Biden administration to continue defending, protecting, and expanding the right to vote.”
