Demos President K. Sabeel Rahman: Biden Plan ‘Powerful First Step Toward an Economic Recovery’
An economy that ultimately lives up to our country’s promise will require us to invest in public goods and health infrastructure, break up concentrated economic power, and ensure equitable access for Black and brown communities.
Demos President K. Sabeel Rahman issued the following statement on Friday in response to President-elect Joe Biden’s “American Rescue Plan”:
“President Biden has put forth a powerful first step toward an economic recovery. As the tandem health and economic COVID-19 crises continue to deepen inequality along lines of race and gender, immediate expansions of unemployment support, rental assistance, and food stamps will help close those gaps and lay the groundwork for longer-term reforms.
“Building a more equitable America is a marathon, not a sprint, however. An economy that ultimately lives up to our country’s promise will require us to invest in public goods and health infrastructure, break up concentrated economic power, and ensure equitable access for Black and brown communities.
“The success of our democracy depends on ensuring Americans’ right not only to participate in our elections but also to have a fighting chance in this economy. As such, Demos will continue to advocate for breaking up corporate power, long-term investment in care infrastructure, and labor law reform that builds power for working people.”
