Let Me Introduce Myself

I am elated to share this first note with you as president of Demos!

I am elated to send this first note to you as president of Demos! After serving on the board of this organization for the last 4 years, I consider it a high honor to be at the helm during this moment of great challenge and great opportunity for our country.

At the root of that change is a fundamental belief that we can close the gap between what is and what can be if we’re willing to put in the work.

As some of you may know, I come to this position after a decade at the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, where I fought for the well-being of all Georgians. Witnessing the transformation we saw on the ground in Georgia earlier this year—one that was years in the making—has filled me with a renewed faith that change is possible all across America. At the root of that change is a fundamental belief that we can close the gap between what is and what can be if we’re willing to put in the work. I come to Demos eager to lead a team driven by this ethos.

Well into 2021, we continue to navigate the grief of the last 16 months, grief elicited by a pandemic, an economic downturn, police violence against Black and brown people, a whirlwind of an election, a violent insurrection, and much more. The movement continues to fight against systemic racism even as legislatures pass laws denying its very existence.

This is a defining moment for America. And I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but Demos right now. Demos is ready to meet the moment, and I am confident that together we can emerge from these challenges stronger than ever before.

Threats to our democracy loom large, yet our movement will not relent, nor will we cede ground to those resistant to our vision.

We intend to create a more just, more inclusive America. An America where all—especially Black, brown, and working people—thrive and hold power, and where our rights are safe, protected, and free from the whims of the courts and an undemocratic few. Threats to our democracy loom large, yet our movement will not relent, nor will we cede ground to those resistant to our vision.

Today, I am grateful to join this team, to dig into this work, and to have your incredible support. I couldn’t be more excited for what the future holds.
