Demos Mourns the Loss of Héctor Figueroa—Champion of Workers Rights, President of SEIU 32BJ, and Demos Board Member

K. Sabeel Rahman

Statement attributed to K. Sabeel Rahman, President of Demos:

Evident through every interaction, Héctor cared deeply for the people who are often forgotten in the struggle for power.

We at Demos are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Héctor Figueroa, president of SEIU 32BJ, Demos board member and linchpin of the New York labor movement. Héctor was a champion for working people everywhere. He wielded his political influence to tackle economic injustice throughout New York City and across the nation and was a steadfast leader in vital campaigns to realize a vision of economic equity. Evident through every interaction, Héctor cared deeply for the people who are often forgotten in the struggle for power. This is a devastating loss for the labor community and the progressive movement.

Héctor joined Demos’ board of trustees in November 2017. As a Board member, Héctor was a consistent voice connecting Demos to the urgent work of advancing democracy, justice, and racial equity. Héctor not only brought vision to our Board but, more importantly, he contributed effortless warmth and joy.

We are forever grateful for his contributions and wisdom as a valued member of our Board.

On behalf of Demos and its board of trustees, I wish to extend our condolences to Héctor’s loved ones, friends, and the 32BJ family during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with you.
