Washington, DC – Less than a day after his first nominee for Labor Secretary, Andrew Puzder, withdrew his name due to unprecedented opposition from workers, legislators and advocates, President Donald Trump announced his new choice to run the Department of Labor, Alexander Acosta. Tamara Draut, Vice President of Policy and Research at Demos, issued the follow statement:
“Alexander Acosta, Trump’s second choice to run the Department of Labor named less than 24-hours after the implosion of Andrew Puzder’s nomination, will need to be subject to the same level of review and scrutiny as his predecessor to ensure that he will work in the best interest of all workers in our country.
“Workers, legislators and advocates have made it clear they want a Labor Secretary who believes in the fundamental role of this agency: to protect the health and safety of workers, ensure workers are paid fairly for the hours they work, and that corporations are accountable for not enforcing these standards. That is the bar for this nomination and one the previous nomination did not meet. At Demos, we are committed to ensuring Mr. Acosta meets that standard.”
