In Positive Step, O’Malley Releases Plan to Address Money in Politics

Adam Lioz, Demos Counsel and Senior Advisor, Policy & Outreach, issued the following statement in response to Governor O'Malley's plan to address the role of big money in politics:

"...a complete plan must go further, especially by acknowledging that our problems go well beyond Citizens United..."

"Yesterday, Governor Martin O’Malley released a plan to address the role of big money in politics.  The plan correctly highlights the strong link between problems with our democracy and our economy and contains several important provisions, notably support for the strong Government By the People Act and an amendment to overturn Citizens United. Yet, a complete plan must go further, especially by acknowledging that our problems go well beyond Citizens United and the importance of appointing justices who will change the Supreme Court’s approach to money in politics.

"As the momentum continues to build behind money in politics reforms, with candidates from both sides of the aisle calling for significant changes to our current system, we must demand that they advance policies that will truly transform our broken system."
