Dēmos President on House Approval of Build Back Better Act

"For the sake of millions — people watching their rents go up while their wages don’t, parents who need support in tackling the ever-rising cost of child care, and seniors who regularly must decide whether they can afford their bills or their pills — the Senate must pass this legislation.”

NEW YORK, NYDēmosPresident Taifa Smith Butler issued the following statement Friday following the House’s approval of the Build Back Better Act:

“Today’s passage of the Build Back Better Act is a testament to the fighting spirit of everyone in the movement working tirelessly for a more equitable economy. Because of them, we now are one step closer to cutting child poverty via the Child Tax Credit, putting a cap on the cost of life-saving prescription drugs, and safeguarding the human right to housing by investing in a million affordable housing units.

“This is what’s possible when we choose people over corporate profit. When the people speak and their lawmakers listen, the result is immediate relief for families working to make ends meet and a long-term commitment to prosperity for generations to come.

“As this bill moves ahead for Senate consideration, lawmakers in the upper house have a responsibility to honor the overwhelming popular support for the Build Back Better Act. They can choose the people who need this legislation or the corporations who feed their campaign coffers, but they cannot do both. For the sake of millions — people watching their rents go up while their wages don’t, parents who need support in tackling the ever-rising cost of child care, and seniors who regularly must decide whether they can afford their bills or their pills — the Senate must pass this legislation.”
