Demos commends the House of Representatives’ passage of HR1, also known as the For the People Act, and calls on the Republican-controlled Senate to provide bipartisan support for the bill’s bold and necessary reforms.

The marquee bill, which features improvements to voting, campaign finance, and ethics laws, addresses the deep political, racial, and economic inequalities that plague our democracy.

These reforms cannot wait. For far too long our democracy has claimed to represent We The People, while in reality, the voices of the white, the affluent, and corporations have dominated. It is paramount that the Senate recognize the damaging effects of the current systems, which disproportionately impact people of color and other marginalized groups, and fully endorse HR1.
