Government Accused of Withholding Information on Student Loan Debt Collectors

MarketWatch

There’s some data to indicate that borrowers of color are more likely to find themselves dealing with a debt collector over unpaid student loans. Black students are more likely to borrow to attend college than their white counterparts and, when they do, they’re more likely to take on more debt, according to a study released last year by Demos, a left-leaning think tank. What’s more, research highlighted by NCLC found that 39% of black borrowers and 17.2% of Hispanic borrowers with a bachelor’s degree who took out loans during the 1992/1993 academic year had defaulted on their debts 10 years later. By comparison, just 6.9% of white borrowers defaulted during this period.
