The College Affordability Act Proposed by Democrats Doesn’t Go Far Enough

But the legislation has garnered mixed reactions from influential groups in the higher education realm. Mark Huelsman, associate director of policy and research for Demos, a progressive think tank, published an analysis of the bill after its announcement chastising House leaders for opting for “tinkering over transformation.”

“This proposal was pretty moderate,” he told Teen Vogue. “In terms of the Pell Grant increase and the free college piece of it, it stops well short of transformative change.” [...]

“Through this bill, the maximum Pell Grant would cover 31% of the total cost of college, so it moves us in a better direction,” Huelsman said, “but it could stand to have a lot more.”
