Statement by Demos on Testimony of Former FBI Director James Comey

New York, NY - Following today’s testimony by Former FBI Director James Comey on his interactions with President Trump, Heather McGhee, President of the New York-based public policy think tank Demos, issued the following statement:

“Former Director Comey’s testimony only deepens our concerns about President Trump’s disturbing attempts to interfere with the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the U.S. election. The conduct Comey ascribes to Trump is simply unacceptable for a president in a free democracy, as well as raises serious questions about whether Trump broke the law.

“The stakes couldn’t be higher - the sovereignty at the core of our democracy is at stake.

“Conservative politicians must ask themselves some tough questions at this critical moment in our history. Will they put country over party and politics and take action to defend our democracy from creeping authoritarianism and reckless disregard for the rule of law? Will they continue to attack Americans’ freedom to vote while winking and nodding at Russia’s leaders interfering in our election? Will they choose democracy over power?”
