Demos Statement: As Trumpcare Passes House It Continues to Threaten Health Care for Millions of Americans

May 4, 2017 (New York, NY) – Following the passage of Trumpcare in the House of Representatives, Tamara Draut, Vice President of Policy and Research at Demos, a New York based public policy think tank, issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump and his allies in the House of Representatives have again ignored the will of the people, who want more security and peace of mind about their health care—not less. With every revision this bill has gotten worse: cutting access for 24 million people, eliminating basic benefits such as maternity care, gutting coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, and allowing insurance companies to charge elderly Americans more for their insurance. And of course, no Republican plan would be complete if it didn’t cut taxes for the wealthy and rich corporations, which Trumpcare also does.

“This bill takes our nation in the wrong direction when it comes to ensuring that people get the care they need to keep them healthy and heal them when they are ill. What we should be doing is moving toward universal, comprehensive health care for everyone as part of the basic contract we make to one another in this country.”

“The Senate must stand up for the American people and say no to Trumpcare.”
