Demos Responds to Trump Administration’s ‘Zero-Tolerance’ Policy

NEW YORK, NY – Today Vijay Das, a campaign strategist at Demos, issued the following statement on the Trump administration’s end to the ‘zero tolerance’ immigration stance that has led to the forced separation of families and the traumatic accounts of infants and toddlers being ripped from their parents.

“While we are relieved that the cruel, inhumane and completely unnecessary forced separation of families at the borders is curtailed, the fight is not over. Yes, the Department of Homeland Security is now instructed to keep families together and the Department of Defense to detain entire families at the border. But the Trump administration is still continuing its egregious assault on immigrant families.

“As people of common decency and humanity – as a demos -- we will not forget the cries of sobbing children needlessly wrenched away from their mothers and fathers who were doing nothing less than any of us would do for our own families. Most are seeking asylum and fleeing intense violence, imminent danger and poverty in search of a place to raise their families and live in safety.

“Together, we must rise up and demand that the latest iteration of Trump’s cruel family detention proposal gets shut down for good. Let us demonstrate not only with our words, but with our actions and voices that we are better than this as a country.”
