Demos Co-founder and Senior Fellow David Callahan Leaves Demos for a Startup Journalism Outfit

NEW YORK — Today, Demos announced that David Callahan, Demos co-founder, Senior Fellow, and founding editor of PolicyShop, is stepping down to pursue a new journalism startup.  

Callahan is the author of numerous books including The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are Doing Wrong to Do Well and Fortunes of Change: The Rise of the Liberal Rich and the Remaking of America. He was also a frequent commentator on Fox News, CNBC, and CNN on a range of issues related to Demos’ focus on economic and political equality.

In 1999, Callahan was part of a group that founded Demos which included Charles Halpern, Rob Fersh, Stephen Heintz, Sara Horowitz, Arnie Miller, former Representative David Skaggs, Linda Tarr-Whelan, and then state senator Barack Obama.

“David’s contribution to Demos over the years has been tremendous,” said Miles Rapoport, President of Demos since 2001, and president-select of Common Cause. “He has been a tireless innovator and led a number of programs and initiatives for us. It’s no wonder he wants to start something altogether new and exciting.”

In January, Callahan launched Inside Philanthropy,  which aims to be “the premier source of day-to-day philanthropic coverage, reporting on how foundations and individual donors give away their money.” He will continue to write for the Demos blog PolicyShop on core Demos issues as a freelance contributor.
