McCutcheon v. FEC: Increasing the Impact of Elite Donors

Demos Counsel Liz Kennedy joined the panel on Melissa Harris-Perry to discuss McCutcheon v. FEC.

Noting that Congress established a system of contribution limits to prevent corruption and the appearance of corruption, Kennedy went on to explain:

The problem is that if the Court takes the radical step to strike down a federal contribution limit for the very first time, going against their precedent for forty years, it would increase the impact of the tiniest sliver of the richest Americans, elite donors, over our politics and policy. Already Americans believe that their elected representatives are far more responsive to their contributors than to their constituents or even the public interest and that government is being prevented from addressing the critical public policy issues that we all face because of the dominance of the donor class.
