The Question: Is Wal-Mart Sincere?

November 25, 2005 | Newsday |

Senior Fellow Jennifer Wheary comments on the latest strategy by Wal-Mart, demonstrating that if Wal-Mart stays wrapped up in the media spin and ignores the full range of evidence offered by the independent researchers, the company will fall far short of the ideals it espouses.

But the other studies commissioned by Global Insight are not nearly as straightforward. The Public Policy Institute of California found that Wal-Mart stores reduce employment, but its evidence that workers' wages also decline is "less robust." The same study also provides "some evidence that Wal-Mart stores increase total employment," but admits that "not all of the evidence supports this conclusion."
