Policy Proposal Calls for New Federally-Funded Public Service Internship Program
3/24 Event Will Highlight Proposal's Key Objectives; Webcast LIVE at Demos.org

Washington--As Spring 2010 college graduates prepare to search for jobs, many from low-income families will start at a competitive disadvantage because they have had to work rather than take crucial, but often unpaid, professional internships that provide key skills for entering the workforce. A new legislative proposal from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) and Demos seeks to remedy this inequity by providing funding for low-income students to take high-quality public service internships. The organizations are also hosting an event detailing this proposal on March 24th at EPI's office in Washington. Media, policy staff and advocates are welcome to attend.

Demos Statement on Sallie Mae Report Showing Skyrocketing Student Credit Card Debt
"A Shocking Increase of More than 44 % in 4 years For College Seniors; Congress Must Act To Protect Student Borrowers"

New York, NY--This week, Sallie Mae published a new report showing a massive increase in credit card debt among college students over the last four years. In response, Tamara Draut, Vice President of Policy and Programs at Demos, a national research and policy center which studies the economic concerns of young adults and the rise of debt in America, and author of the book Strapped: Why America's 20-and 30-Something's Can't Get Ahead, issued the following statement.

The study revealed some startling results that suggest a college education has become unaffordable to many young adults. For example, more students are taking on debt to finance their college education because of a shift in federal student aid programs. In 1980, the most common form of college funding was federal grants, which amounted to 52 percent of the government's student aid system. Loans followed at 45 percent. But by 2000, loans had risen to 58 percent of the student aid pie while grants dropped to 41 percent. Coinciding with the shift in federal student aid programs were dramatic increases in college tuition.
