I wrote Women Lead the Way because no-one else wrote it. This is still a non-issue in the United States. It was inspired by the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, and the recognition there that you get better outcomes in the economy and in political decision-making if in fact you have 30% or more women at the table. It is my goal to make this question of balanced leadership into a public issue and begin to move it forward in the United States as many other countries have done.

To build confidence, we have to address a common assumption that it really makes no difference whether it is a man or woman who is at the decision-making table. We have been fed a lot of that as if what we are looking for is equality where equal means ‘the same'. In fact, what we are looking for is the equality of opportunity and access which means that you can do different things with that opportunity.
