Demos Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Dr. Dorothy Height
Statement from Demos President Miles Rapoport

Photo Credit: Lateef MangumNew York--Dr. Dorothy Height, described as "the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement," passed away at the age of 98 last week. In response, Demos issued the following statement:

"There have been very few famous Americans with the grace, determination, and accomplishments of Dr. Dorothy Height who died recently at the age of 98," said Miles Rapoport, President of Demos. "She will be sorely missed. A towering figure in the fight for racial and women's justice and equality, Dr. Height's leadership was a beacon of hope for many and a persistent voice for the voiceless in our society on the side of freedom and liberty."

"Many in the years of their nineties would have rested on their laurels and quietly savored their legacy. Not Dr. Height. Only a month from her death she led a discussion at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights on the need for the United States to ratify the women's treaty, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) by calling it 'our unfinished business.' She understood what many have not seen; women's rights are human rights."

"At Demos we will rededicate ourselves to helping complete Dr. Height's call and work with others to see that we join the worldwide consensus affirming the principles of fundamental human rights, racial equality, and equality for women around the world."
