About Brenda

Brenda joined Demos in January 2007 with 18 years of experience in litigation, public education, advocacy and media appearances on voting rights, campaign finance reform and election reform issues. She directs Demos' litigation initiatives in the Democracy Program and participates in Demos' research and policy work on democracy and voting rights issues, working out of Demos' Boston office. Before joining Demos, Brenda served as Managing Attorney at the National Voting Rights Institute in Boston. Brenda also served previously as Director of the Voting Rights Project at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in Washington, D.C.
Brenda has extensive experience as a speaker and writer on voting rights, voter suppression, access to voter registration, campaign finance reform, redistricting, election protection, Department of Justice oversight, and other election reform and democracy issues. She has argued two voting rights cases before the United States Supreme Court. Court. She testifies frequently before Congress, federal agencies and state legislatures on voting rights, campaign finance reform and other democracy issues.
Brenda makes frequent appearances and provides interviews in broadcast and print media including the Lehrer NewsHour, NPR, Greater Boston, New England Cable News, Democracy Now, the Brian Lehrer Show, The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, LA Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, National Journal, National Law Journal, Christian Science Monitor, and numerous local news outlets.
Brenda speaks regularly at national conferences and convenings on voting rights, campaign finance reform and other democracy issues. She has also authored numerous opinion pieces, law review articles, book chapters and other publications on these issues.
Brenda is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and a member of the Board of Directors of Common Cause Massachusetts and the advisory board of the Prison Policy Initiative. She received her law degree from Yale Law School and her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College.
