Celebration 2008 - Realizing Democracy's Promise

The Realizing Democracy's Promise: Demos Celebration 2008 on May 15, 2008 brought together more than 250 guests with an energy and excitement in the room that was palpable. We reached a national audience with television, online and print coverage of the event by ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, NY1, The New York Times, New Haven Independent and several others. The silent political art auction featuring original works by Jules Feiffer and Roz Chast, among others, added an exciting element of artistic expression to the discussion of political change. The Celebration was a tremendous success for Demos and we are grateful for the support and partnership of everyone who attended and sponsored the event. The spirit of the evening was perhaps best expressed in the words of the honorees, Senator John Edwards and Susan Berresford, former president of the Ford Foundation:

"Demos helps us all examine ideas that may seem appealing but with closer analysis clearly set back our nation's ability to advance justice, and family and community well-being. Demos then helps mobilize broad constituencies for reform and innovation in policy-making and practical alliance building. I am pleased to be associated with this work and believe it helps us all hold to high ideals and aspirations." -- Susan Berresford

"If you want to know...what Demos is about, and why the next election is so enormously important...[It is about] having a visionary leader, and having an educated, engaged people that care not just about themselves and not just about their own family but about our community and about the men and women around them. That's what I'm about, that's what you are about, and that is what Demos is about, and that is why I'm proud to be here tonight." -- Senator John Edwards
