On July 26th and 27th, 2004 Demos, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Deliberative Democracy Consortium convened a gathering of practitioners in the election reform and deliberative democracy fields. Entitled "Enriching Democracy", the gathering was held at the Rockfeller Brothers Fund Pocantico Conference Center in Tarrytown, New York.
The meeting was designed to facilitate understanding, exchange and possible areas of collaboration between practitioners in these key areas of work. The panels encouraged participants to learn more about best practices, think innovatively about how to engage community members using new approaches, and expand the assumptions of frequently used strategies. The thirty-four participants represented a diverse group of foundations, universities, non-profit organizations, and included former and current elected officials. A number of project ideas emerged, and several working groups were formed to continue discussion and begin implementation.
The agenda and full list of participants are available online and further information will become available as projects develop.
