Unfair and Unwise

The irony is that despite all the sturm and drang there won't be any real reduction in long-term deficits, either. After needlessly panicking the population with a phony scenario about the dire threat posed by deficits, Washington's hapless policymakers put together a cynical and mind-bendingly complicated deal that cannot possibly succeed.

Forget all the noise about supercommittees and trigger mechanisms. Real deficit reduction would require increased taxes, an end to perpetual warfare overseas, gainful employment for most of the 25 million men and women who can't find full-time work and, above all, steps to rein in the runaway costs of health care in the United States. The inhabitants of Washington's alternate universe are incapable of that kind of heavy lift.
