Despite the frequent dominance of conservative ideas in government and politics throughout American history, many major advancements have been fostered, fought for, and won by progressives against conservative resistance. From the Bill of Rights to the New Deal, the civil rights movement, women's suffrage, Social Security, and environmental protection, the progressive movement has led the way toward democracy, social justice, and economic opportunity.

Join us for a Demos Forum with author and activist Mike Lux to discuss his new book, The Progressive Revolution: How the Best in America Came to Be. In an illuminating narrative, Lux explains how progressives have strengthened our democracy and our civil and political rights throughout history, even in the face of incredible adversity and relentless opposition. Highlighting what he calls “Big Change Moments,” Lux shows that during certain periods in history—brought forth by progressive pioneers and the speeches or documents that they wrote—Americans have seized the opportunity to turn away from conservative policies that set our country back and instead pushed for forward-thinking progressive policies.

About the Author:

Michael Lux is the President and CEO of Progressive Strategies, L.L.C., a political consulting firm he co-founded in 1999, focused on strategic political consulting for non-profits, labor unions, PACs and progressive donors Previously, he was Senior Vice President for Political Action at People For the American Way (PFAW), and served at the White House from January 1993 to mid-1995 as a Special Assistant to the President for Public Liaison. In November of 2008, Lux was named to the Obama-Biden Transition Team, where he served as an advisor to the Office of Public Liaison on relationship with the progressive community. Lux has also founded and currently chairs a number of new organizations and projects, including American Family Voices, the Progressive Donor Network, and BushRecall.org.
