Retail Responses
I wrote an article this week for The Exchange blog on Yahoo! Finance. The editors called the piece, Low-Wage Jobs Cause More Problems Than They Solve, a provocotive placeholder that elicited all types of comments, about 900 of them within 36 hours.
Some reader comments are more thoughtful than others, but even the emotionally charged one-liners calling the author crazy reveal that the issues surrounding low wage work and the future of the economy are striking a nerve among Americans now. One thread that came up in the comments is whether those working low wage jobs have a right to marry and attempt to raise children they cannot support.
One user, Mike, wrote:
Attempting to start a family working a low wage job is basically suicide.
Mike had many supporters and a few detractors. Charles, another user, wrote
You would be surprised that the skills you have can be learned by average people.
But you chose to look down on people, not the ones who made bad choices but the ones who bust their #$%$ for next to nothing because they have no choice.
