Matt Bruenig on Sovereign Wealth Funds

| audio

On the debut episode of Disorderly ConductDemos blogger Matt Bruenig made a guest appearance to discuss the idea of a sovereign wealth fund, of which Alaska's Permanent Fund and CalPERS are two real world examples.

Matt explains that there are two conceptions of such funds. The first, which Bruenig endorses, is a fund acting as a passive player. Its operation and purpose "will be fairly narrow. It will grab up a lot of capital resources and then it will socialize the gains of those resources for everyone, but it won't do much beyond that." The other conception of it incorporates a more active role, enacting financial reform through purposeful action.
